Fake gauges before real ones?

I am contemplating buying fake gauges before I get real ones, because I want to make sure I'll absolutely love them lol HOWEVER, it states they are 16 gauge to even put in. Is this doable? Should I do something before I attempt to put these in? I normally wear really dangly earrings that stretch my lobes some...but I don't want to damage anything.
